Location
The pond was photographed at a friend's farm pond, the clouds were photographed somewhere in Iowa on one of my many road trips to visit my daughter and grand-babies, and the photograph of myself was shot in studio using a few different images that I pieced together in Photoshop. I also lengthened my hair in this image for a more dramatic and sexier look.Time
The pond and clouds were photographed around the same time of year and around the same time of day; late afternoon, around 4 pm. There were very few clouds that were in the original image with the landscape/pond photograph so I wanted to include these clouds that had sunbeams. In turn, I created shadow on the trees/landscape of the scenery by taking down the brightness in areas.Lighting
I knew which background image that I wanted to use for this self portrait before it was shot, so I knew that I needed more backlight to accomplish the best light.Equipment
I used a tripod, remote, two strobes and a 1'x1'x2' block that I laid on. I, also used my tether with Lightroom so that I wouldn't have to keep running back to my camera every time I took a photograph to see if I got the shot I needed. I was able to view the image that I just took from a distance saving tons of time and energy.Inspiration
I am a huge fan of Brooke Shaden and follow her on facebook. I first discovered her through one of the Creative Live courses that she had taught last February (2014). She has a unique way of bringing together her visions of creativity and I recommend that you check out her work. She has some great levitation photographs in her portfolio.Editing
There is a ton of post-production for this image with piecing together portions of myself and then creating shadow in the pond and grassy area and then changing the clouds for a more dramatic scene. In my camera bag
I always use my Canon Rebel xsi with my Canon EFS 18-55mm lens. Even though I have a couple other lenses I prefer this one for almost all shoots. I also carry my tripod around just in case. It's a lightweight, cheapy tripod and does the job just fine.Feedback
I have learned that the most important thing to think about when piecing together images that were not photographed at the same time or place is to pay attention to the lighting; the direction, the intensity and the shadows that need to be created for the believability of the overall final image. When I am unsure of how to perform a task in Photoshop - Google is my best friend. Google anything that you wish to accomplish in Photoshop or any other program that you may have available. It is amazing how you can change an image to bring forward the story that you wish to tell.
