Thank you! I appreciated the way he was actually studying the painting. Stopped me in my tracks!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at the "Da Vinci: The Exhibition" in Kansas City, Missouri Union Station. My husband and I visited the exhibition January 2016. A beautiful tour of Da Vinci's greatest creations and inventions was displayed; reproductions of course, but we got a glimpse into the mastermind and artists life and accomplishments.

Time

This was an indoor exhibition, so the time of day is irrelevant.

Lighting

Each section of the displayed works of art were dimly lit throughout the tour with what seemed to be incandescent lighting. This was my first outing with my new camera, still learning the settings. I believe I used AWB for this photograph.

Equipment

I used my new Canon 70d and my 28-90mm lens. No tripod or flash was used.

Inspiration

I was basically walking around watching other people admire De Vinci's creations. There was a couple people that was in the same area that my husband and I were in toward the end of our tour that must have been there for quite some time. I think this because I didn't see them earlier toward the beginning of the tour. I think that they lingered for quite some time in the section where De Vinci's paintings (duplicated) were displayed. I do not know this man in the suit. People are always asking me if that is my husband, but no; my husband and I were dressed very casually that day and this man all dressed nicely made for a better subject than my husband. This man's sleek suit made for a nice, clean silhouette.

Editing

I did a little post production by cropping a little dead space off the side of the image and enhancing the colors of the painting to help make it a little more dramatic.

In my camera bag

I carry my Canon 70d, Canon xsi, 18-55mm lens, 28-90 mm lens, 75-300mm zoom lens, a couple ttl's just in case.

Feedback

I feel that this was a lucky capture and knew that when I took it that this was a special image for me. I couldn't wait to upload it and view it full size. The other images leading up to this moment and the ones after this moment were not in comparison to how this one made me feel when I captured it. I captured this man's wife observing the imitation of "Mona Lisa", but it just didn't have the impact that this one does, to me. My advice to others wanting to capture a tender moment would be to watch people's reaction to their surroundings. Consider your angle from the subject/s and lighting. For candid shots do not use your flash. You don't want people to get nervous around you and walk away. I pretend to not even notice the people I am photographing. After photographing a stranger and putting my camera down I look past the person that I just photographed making them think I was photographing something else :) Sneaky, but it works.
