Love your use of shallow dof bringing all the attention to precisely where it should be. One of my favourite subjects, too. :)

Location
I took this image while visiting my parents in France. They have about 30 horses and a bit of land for them to roam free on.Time
It was early afternoon, say about 2 or 3 o'clock.Lighting
The sky was overcast and therefore a diffused light, which turned out quite well rather than any harsh shadows.Equipment
I shot this on my Canon 7D, using a 50mm lens. No flash or tripod, just hand held at 500th of a second @f1.8.Inspiration
One thing I love to do when I visit my parents farm in France is to have a wander through the fields and photograph without any pressure. As I am an in-house photograph for an interior ecommerce company then its nice to just take my time. So this shot was just one of many, but I had envisioned this image in my head and I was lucky enough to get the right composition with the subject luckily in the right stance.Editing
I think I added a bit if clarity in RAW, and bumped up the saturation a little and whitened the shine on the eye very slightly. Not too much or it starts to look too processed. In my camera bag
Canon 7D, Sigma 18-250 f3.5, Canon 50mm f1.8, Sigma 10 - 20 f3.5, 2 x Canon 430 ex ii flash guns, macro extension barrels, wireless flash triggers and a few other bits and pieces.Feedback
For this type of shot I would recommend the 50mm lens. Since owning having it in my kit, I wonder why I didn't have it before. Amazing lens for the price and the shallow depth of field is what allowed me to capture this shot. Being patient and calm with the animals and thinking about how you want the image to look in your head, then to keep going and shoot while you have the attention patience of the subject.
