This photo takes me back to the first pony our family owned and we used to do just this...take them for a swim in our pond.... Adore this shot!

beautiful capture, great story telling and character, i love the clarity in this shot given the difficulty of separating the subject from the river and background. beautiful contrast and natural feel

Location
This image was taken by a river which is next to my parents house in Limoges, France. The girl in the image is my beautiful niece Sophie with her horse Tia.Time
Mid afternoon on a hot summers day, me and the family were cooling off by the river.Lighting
The sun was shining high in the sky, bypassing the scattered cloud formations and beating down on us, so the lighting was intermittently diffused or harsh.Equipment
Canon 7D with a 50mm 1.8 lens. Hand held on a fast shutter speed and the aperture wide open at 1.8.Inspiration
This is one of those moments that you cannot plan. My niece decided to bring her horse Tia down to the river for a dip and I just knew that with the 50mm then this would come out interesting and so I snapped off a few dozen during thisEditing
I always shoot in raw and so in the developing I raised the clarity a touch, toned down the sky then used a gradient clarity for the sky. Raised the contrast a bit and converted to monochrome. In my camera bag
Canon 7D, Canon 50mm 1.8, Sigma 18-250, Tamron 24-70, Sigma 10-20 3.5. I always carry 2 x Canon speedlite 430 ii ex but generally tend to shoot with natural light.Feedback
Use your surroundings and think about composition. You don't have to pay for film, so shoot more than you need as sometimes there will be that little gem in there that you didn't realise till you see it on the bigger screen.
