Location
This is Yosemite.... about a 1/2 mile EASY hike off the road. The water is the Merced river. which bisects the valley.Time
Pre-dawn. Just after a storm.Lighting
Get up early and brave bad weather if you want a striking image.... by 8 AM, all the good light is gone until sunset.... so shoot early and late. Noon is when you sleep!Equipment
Nikon D810, 14-24mm and a tripod.Inspiration
I had seen others images from this angle, and put it on my short list of places to shoot from. I think I made it here at least three days. Mid-winter I got three days of vastly different weather, which suited me as I found the shot so compelling that a variety of lighting and moods was important to me. Its always a crap shoot with regard to weather, you NEVER know what you're gonna get. But if you aren't there for the best light, you don't get the picture.... If you shoot one or two frames of a shot and move on, you are not a photographer. You shoot snapshots. Photographers work a shot until they get something like this. That involves an investment in time and lack of sleep.Editing
Yes. Of course. I played mostly in Lightroom adjusting exposure and contrast... and then probably overlayed a highlights layer in Ps.In my camera bag
As I ALWAYS say, I make that assessment before I go out to shoot. It is a balance of variety of focal lengths and weight and comfort. As this was a relatively short hike, I probably had the full compliment of 3 zooms covering 14-200mmFeedback
You need to dedicate the time. This was a snow storm clearing, and I can tell you it was COLD. If you are not willing to get up at4, you aren't gonna get anything like this. You have to work for it.
