Last time I was here, we were pretty much alone. This trip, easily a couple hundred people there. Yet it still has the magic. One of the most photographed places in the US, so it's a little hard to be original here now... I just wanted to get a pleasing image. I was happy.

Behind The Lens

Location

This has suddenly become one of the most photographed spots in the US it seems. A friend and fellow photographer says its the "Instagramification of America." Horseshoe Bend is a super easy hike and readily accessible.... and it is just impossible to take a bad picture here... so I can see why. We used to go here and be all alone... now- though it's hard to tell- there are literally hundred of people all around. I hear they are expanding the parking lot and paving the trail.

Time

That would be sunset....

Lighting

I would just say there is no way to get this in a single exposure. While this is multiple exposures, I would NOT say this is HDR. This is blended photography. Just for the heck of it, I did push this through Photomatix.... and it was NOTHING like a hand blend.

Equipment

Tripod. HAVE to have a tripod; if you don't use a tripod for ever shot you make you are not making the best images possible. A Nikon 810 and a super wide angle lens with a clean front element! Remote trigger.

Inspiration

I have shot this before. A few times actually. But it is pretty hard to get a good sunset here, unless you get lucky. I love going back to places- learning from places- and perfecting a spot. I like this better than my previous shots here.... but I love going here no matter what, too! We were in Page for a birthday week swing through Northern AZ and Southern Utah- Including both Antelope Canyons, Zion and a hike up to the Subway. To be honest, we got here a bit later than I would have liked. There were a LOT of people all over the lip, but there was a lot of open places even still. I chose this for the foreground element- the sun hitting the bush made me very happy. I set the tripod pretty low for increased stability (and honestly, raising the camera 12" would not make ANY difference overall.) I literally got there, put up the legs, leveled the camera and the sun was hitting the horizon! So I knocked off a few exposures and had what I needed. I do recall helping a few people around me with their exposures. Not much you can do to help iPhone photographers, but there was a guy with a Nikon 3400 I think that I was bale to help get some good images. Met some GREAT people from Italy- they were a blast. And there was a guy flying a drone there... ANd a wedding photographer shooting a couple. I assume she got good images.... though she wasn't using a flash, so I wonder...

Editing

I always start in the Lightroom. I do basic color and contrast manipulations. Then I send it all as layers into Photoshop. Each layer has a specific component I want in the final. I brushed them all together using layer masks. Combine, dehaze, sharpen and we're done!

In my camera bag

I have multiple bags, all for different circumstances. And even then I load them different depending on the shoot. Where I am shooting and what I am shooting dictates EVERYTHING.... there is no normal load out.

Feedback

Learn layering. Do NOT rely on HDR or think that will save your ass- it just makes you a monkey. Never EVER do anything Auto. Aperture priority IS an auto mode. Auto-ISO is an Auto mode. Photomatix is Auto. DON'T USE THEM AS CRUTCHES. Set everything in Manual and make the choices for each step- and know WHY you made that choice. Take the time to think and plan. Learn to do it all yourself. Make mistakes and go back and learn to shoot it better. Learn to fix your mistakes and correct your images.
