I feel sorta cheating- this is a repost. I also feel like it is a new, better version of this image. I brought out the colors more, and made some other, very fine adjustments. I feel this better represents the mood and the feeling I wanted out of this piece- the sun is still very much the focus, and the rocks more sublime. There is a lot to wander through in this image....

It's a fantastic image, redo or not. This is the way it really looks there! Congrats on your award! :)

You should have won. Cannot believe some of these images that make the finals.

Very nice. A cropped version putting more emphasis on the main action beyond the arch could look great too.

Location
This was from my first trip to Mesa Arch in Canyonlands Utah. This was back when you could go there and not fight dozens of others for the shot... Regardless, this shot is still attainable if you arrive early on a good day. ANd this is always a fun place to go to...Time
This is dawn.Lighting
This is all natural light- which is NOT to say it is all one image. Shooting into the sun gives you a lot of shadows for anything facing away from the sun... so this was bracketed and thenb hand-blended to get a more appealing image. (It is NOT HDR).Equipment
Tripod required. I either used a remote trigger OR a time delay on the shutter, not sure which. I beleive this was from before I had a good wide angle, I believe this is a rented rokinion 14mmInspiration
The obvious think is the view- I mean, this is an OMG shot right? But I also wanted the sun IN the shot, which makes pulling it off a bit harder.Editing
Yes. Multiple images are layered, masked and then brought in our out by hand. Different layers target different goals from me, so (and this is key!) each layer was developed for a certian and specific part of the whole image. The sky is NOT the rocks, and the sun is something entirely different too- so I developed each part seperately and combined in layers. In my camera bag
I take everything I expect to need on a specific shoot. My bag is different on each shoot because each shoot demands different gear.Feedback
You cannot just walk into a shot like this and pull it off. You need to practice, and you need experience. Editing is 1/2 of this image, if not more. Practice. Get out and try. You may (you WILL!) fail.... but figure out what went wrong and do it again solving the problems when you do. These are all steps on your journey!
