Fly Geyser is also on posted land, and not open to the public. Many have been arrested trying. It is a beautiful sight though.

Yeah- you sorta have to know someone out there. But I think that is changing. There are now ways to get out legally...

Stunning capture. Do you know a way to get here. I had heard it was not open to public.

Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of the most unique places I have ever been. It is a bit hard to get to, though. The first time I went, I left my home in SLC at midnight and drove all night to try and get the sunrise. I was about an hour late, but it was still amazing... My last trip, we met up with our hosts in Reno, and left about 4 AM. Even still, we BARELY made it. This location is on private land, and while they are making a lot of noise about opening this up for public tours, it is still closed. The Black Rock people are who you need to get ahold of to get an invite out here...

Time

This was obviously dawn. The whole point of this shoot was to get the color of dawn and the color of the geyser together. Most shots of this place are mid-day and full sun; I was wanting something very different.

Lighting

This is all natural. I did shoot some alt exposures if I needed to bring in HDR. but that was not needed.

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon D-810 with a shutter of 1/640sec. The ISO was 320. I used a Tamron lens set to ƒ/10 at 24mm. There were 5-7 vertical images shot for this panorama. Stitched in Lightrooms.

Inspiration

Many years ago, a photographer came into my framers with a picture of the geyser. I was taken. She was entering the piece in the state fair. That stayed in my head for a decade, and then I finally decided to get out there and shoot it. It took a while to get it all worked out, but when I finally made it, I was so happy! It was one of the major bucket list items in my photography career.

Editing

First, I had to patch up the panorama. Next I straightened my lines and worked out all the distortions from a 24mm. I did some dodging and burning, and played with some contrast. That was about it.

In my camera bag

I have a few bags, for different uses. This was my D810 kit, which I use in a backpack bag. I strap a carbon fiber manfroto with a RRS ball head on it- fast to use, secure, lightweight. This kit usually is a 14-14, 24-70 and a 70-200. Depending on what I want to do, I may throw in a prime or two. This kit also has a lot of extras in it- I keep 4 batteries, a couple flashlights, lens cleaners, filters (none used this day). I have a separate APS-C kit with my D500 in it. I also keep a few flashes around, which I do use in landscape photography sometimes. I am currently using Flashpoints- the AD 200, Strobes and the XPLORE 600.

Feedback

It is always easier to shoot a location the SECOND time. You know a lot better what to expect, and you have a lot better idea what you want to get (what you missed the LAST time!). You can probably drop things from your pack, or add new things. The most important thing I would say is that it is OK to pre-viz. Its important to- you need to plan, think up ideas, etc. JUST DON'T BE TIED TO YOUR PRE-VIZ. You will be out doors, in nature, and at the mercy of the elements. YOU NEEDED TO ROLL WITH IT! All the pre-viz in the world wont help you shoot a sunrise on a rainy day. SO shoot a good rain picture, don't try to make it something it is not. My best, most incredible pictures were all not what I originally set out to shoot.
