Very nice my friend, congrats. The woods on Medvednica (Sljeme) is much denser now and find view like this is difficult.

Behind The Lens

Location

Photo has been made many years ago along the mountain road over Sljeme, summit of Mt. Medvednica that forms the northern side of Zagreb (Croatia)

Time

It's hard to say now, because the photo was shot on film, so there is no Exif. As I usually spent my weekends in the Outdoors, the most probable date would be some November Saturday or Sunday, but I can be almost certain the time was around 0900 hours.

Lighting

Nothing but God-given Daylight!

Equipment

The camera of those days was a Minolta Dynax 7000i, with 35-80 Rokkor. The photo was shot out of hand, using no filters nor support.

Inspiration

My inspiration was the same one that has always made me go in the mountains on my free time! I have passed the same roads hundreds of times, and every visit revealed something different, even when shooting from the same spots. In that respect, time works like a river; as you can't step into the same water twice, so you can't ever find the same light conditions; let alone the same Nature aspect in the same space. This should be enough inspiration for anyone who appreciates the Nature.

Editing

The original (a Fujichrome Sensia 100ASA) slide film was developed in E-6 process. It was scanned some years later, and its digital version was then optimised and cropped to this format. The resulting image was resized for upload - and that was all the work it required.

In my camera bag

I load my photo vest with whatever I might need for my photo session, walk, or trip. If the weather requires it, I'll wear the vest under a spacious windbreaker. In the meantime, my photo bags usually keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. The vest's many pockets will contain two cameras, several rolls of film (most often a Fujichrome Sensia or Velvia), spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one photo clamp standing in for a tripod. There will be about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. The vest also has large pockets that may possibly hold a small water bottle, sandwich, or bar of chocolate if I'm going out for the whole day. I may also include a small action camera, mainly for its wide field of view and resistance to water and weather. The large back pocket of the vest is reserved for lightweight rain poncho, usually in seasons of unstable weather conditions. So, if weather plays up, the poncho neatly covers all. If I'm on a trip that keeps me near to the car, its boot may hold various other things, like a proper tripod (most likely a self-adapted, heavy theodolite stand), and a box containing personal-comfort things, like a sleeping bag, a small gas stove, coffee, sugar, instant soup, water, bread and maybe some more serious sustenance. My 4x4 might even replace a tent. It all depends upon where and how I plan the trip. However, if I'm out for a day only, my photo vest can hold all I need to make photos. And using the tools mentioned above, much can be improvised along the way. In majority of cases I find it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag.

Feedback

Plan your outings and trips, but be ready for unpredictables too! Keep things simple, and don't overload yourself with gear just for maybes. Adapt your gear to what you find, and prefer simplicity as a sensible way to go. If you travel by car, see if sleeping in it wold be simpler (or maybe safer) than erecting the tent. And if you are choosing the car for your photography, nothing beats a 4x4 that can take you to nice places off-road fashion. Tastes will differ, but my choice so far was a Lada Niva running on Propane / Butane gas. You can simply organize any car for several days trip by adding just a few things I mentioned above. Sometimes it is more productive to spend 24 hours photographing just one nice location than zipping around, so plan your location ahead.
