Hermoso!!! Me gustan todas las razas pero esta es mi debilidad. Si no fuera por Sabú el ovejero de mis padres yo no te estaría escribiendo. Saludos desde Uruguay

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was made in my family home in Zagreb (Croatia), where we've had dogs for as far back I can remember! And it means looong way back! But this dog lived there just some thirteen years ago...

Time

Date/Time of the original was 09-Nov-08, the time was 11:01:40

Lighting

Sure, all of it: Shutter Speed: 1/50 sec, f/4.3, ISO 125, 0.00 eV, Metering Mode: Pattern, Flash: Off, Did not fire, and Focal Length was 28.03 mm. The photo was made outside in the garden, in the normal daylight.

Equipment

My Olympus Superzoom of those days was a SP570UZ; small, lightweight, and quick to employ when needed. To my sorrow, later on this excellent camera developed a mechanical error which was unrepairable (read: too expensive to repair). The photo was made out of hand with no added accessory of any kind.

Inspiration

Well, this big and playful German Shepherd was always an inspiration, since he seemed to have had a kind of humor of his own. Still, he was able to distinguish things he was allowed to gnaw from things that were a no-no... like slippers, shoes, rugs and alike. But when he was given something to play with, it was his - like the tennis balls which he adored. At times he would even manage to carry three in his mouth! Carrying two balls was a kind of easy for him... and it was also title-inspiring, due to the wordplay (or pun; intended, since he was one serious guard dog).

Editing

As far as I can remember, not much. There was some croping to get to the portrait, and nothing more serious that that.

In my camera bag

For decades already I find it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag. It is more than enough to take along whatever I want or need for my photo session, walk or trip. My photo bags usually stay home or in the car, to keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. My tripod has its permanent place in the car. The vest pockets usually contain two cameras. One of those is always waterproof. Sometimes I'll add a small action camera, mainly for its wide field of view and resistance to water and weather. Other pockets keep the spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one small camera clamp which can be fixed to almost anything. In many cases this can replace a tripod. The vest has deep pockets for longer lenses, and these usually hold a small water bottle, a sandwich, or a bar of chocolate - if I plan on being out for the whole day. I always pack about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. Much can be improvised with these if need be. Recently I made it even easier, and take the essentials along in a waist pouch; one variable-volume McKinley. In the Outdoors, simplicity and comfort are my most important aspects!

Feedback

First and foremost, always have a camera at hand. Nowadays it is easier than ever, since everybody has at least a smartphone - and it's hard to even find one without a camera! But if you are serious about photography, let the phone camera be a spare one, and shoot with something / anything better. By "better" I mean the camera that lets you adapt for all kinds of shooting parameters, so you get the photos exactly the way you want them to be, and possibly right in-camera. For this it has to have superior optics. Also, the camera ergonomic features are definitely better adapted to normal handling, and especially when handling fast! Anyway... always have a camera along because some scenes will rarely repeat - and the lost moments are lost forever. Have a Good Light!
