Can't resist adding: the usually associated distress call is not in any way connected with neither May nor day. Mayday is simply wrongly voiced m'aider (french shortened form of "venez m'aider", which means "come and help me") and it is properly pronounced medé.
Whatever the pronounciation, I hope you will never need it!
