If the propeller hits something in the water, its shear pin will snap to save the transmission gear.
The way things are with all the flotsam around, it is paramount to have some spare pins along. I always had several of those stuck in the noise-muffling foam that lines the insides of the outboard engine cover.
Thus it was easy to replace the broken pin; it only takes maybe three minutes.
And it is also wayyy better than rowing... :)
