We shot this home up in Cottonwood Heights last week. Walked in the door on this home and knew it was something special. Yes, the clouds are real and that is a window. Yes, we got lucky with the clouds, but we also have the artistic vision to see this image, and the experience to capture the beauty of the property. We are not just real estate photographers, we capture more than four walls and a roof- we feel what the spirit of the house and we chase then capture that spirit.
This home was only on the market 3 hours before it sold. I would not say that is only due to our images, but they sure helped show this wonderful home. And the Realtor specifically used our high quality package for our free marketing kit to get the word out- and that CERTAINLY worked!

My day job is as a real estate photographer. This was just another assignment, and though the Realtor warned me it was a "colorful" house, I did not know what she meant, or what to expect. I came in through the bathroom window (not really through the garage)... and up the stairs you see to the right, turned and saw this. I thought to myself, Yes, there is a Photography God, and today she is smiling at me. I probably spent an hour refining this shot. Getting the center down PERFECTLY is SUPER IMPORTANT! Then I waited for the best clouds- yes, those are REAL clouds!- and shot away. There are a few exposures combined here, the ceiling, the chandelier, etc, but all are hand blended.Time
This was prolly 10 through about noon.Lighting
There is a LOT of lighting in this scene. You can prolly see there is a flash on the closet to the left. There is another bouncing over my shoulder right. For various exposures, there were also flashes in the doors left and right near the front door. I removed the door to the right in Photoshop for the final as I found it distracting.Equipment
This would have been my big gun, the D-810. I used 3-4 flashes total, and used them in different set ups and combined them for the final comp. Tripod and remote trigger of course.Inspiration
I literally came around the corner up the stairs and saw this. Needed no inspiration, it was there. Again, the photo Gods were smiling on me that day!Editing
Layering. A LOT of layering. I wanted a nice, even, natural looking exposure, so I combined a few exposures to get all the qualities I wanted from each into the final. As I mentioned above, I removed the door to the right because it was annoying. With a simple yellow wall to cover with, that was sups easy. Then it was just a matter of getting all the exposures to the right levels, masking gently and combining! In my camera bag
When on a job, I keep EVERYTHING in in my car and bring in what I need. I have two COMPLETE sets of gear, because if I only have one set and something goers wrong, I have NO sets of gear. And in my business, that is not acceptable. I have two cameras, two lenses, two sets of flashes, two tripods, fliers, everything. I carry 4 light stands, and I have occasionally used all 4.Feedback
Take it slow. Be methodical. Know what you want for a final, and shoot to get that. This is one of my personally favorite images. It is good because I took the time to get all the elements I needed. A single exposure is not enough.
