Behind The Lens

Location

I made this photo literally on the mountain road, because I've found the broken toy car there... so the idea is somewhat older than the execution. And then the photo had to wait some more for the post-process which finalized the image to what it is.

Time

Date and time is-was May 25th. 2012 @ 11:57:53

Lighting

Maybe it would be interesting to someone, so: Shutter Speed was 1/125 sec, f/2.8, ISO 160, 0.00 eV, Metering Mode: Pattern, Flash Off, focal length 6.2 mm, and White Balance @ Auto. Repeatability, zero. And then, the photo is a manipulation of more than one content... so it can't be reasily epeated as well!

Equipment

The small, universal Canon D10 was at hand Seems it was enough for this one! The shot was made out of hand, with no extra equipment of any sort.

Inspiration

The overall inspiration is the way some humans behave in traffic, thinking that the bigger the car, the more privilege it should have. This might actually be real but in the opposite sense, meaning that people in smaller, more delicate cars take more care when confronting bigger or tougher cars. Thus, "traffic mentality" is based upon the human psyche, as opposed to the rules that regulate the traffic itself... Go figure... :)

Editing

There was a lot of post-processing, of course. First, the broken toy shell had to be graphically "repaired", things like headlights added, so that later on the signs of damage like smoke) could be applied in a way that would, at least for the fleeting moment, be accepted as an "accident". I can't remember exactly what all I've done to the image, but FYI, it was all done in ACDSee.

In my camera bag

For decades already I find it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag. It is more than enough to take along whatever I want or need for my photo session, walk or trip. My photo bags usually stay home or in the car, to keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. The tripod has its permanent place in the car. My vest pockets usually contain two cameras. Regardless of which is the "main" camera, one of those is always some waterproof model, if the weather plays up or when I find something interesting in the shallows. Nowadays I usually use Nikon P900 or Sony RX100m7, and the waterproof backup is an Olympus TG-2 or a Paralenz DiveCam. Other vest pockets keep the spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one small camera clamp which can be fixed to almost anything. In many cases this can replace a tripod. The vest has deep pockets for longer lenses, and these usually hold a small water bottle, a sandwich, or a bar of chocolate - if I plan on being out for the whole day. I always pack about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. Much can be improvised with these if need be. Recently I made it even easier, and take the essentials along in a waist pouch; one variable-volume McKinley. In the Outdoors, simplicity and comfort are my most important requirements!

Feedback

You could, of course, copy the whole idea and redo it, maybe even better... Or you could look around for similar relations and use any props to comment upon human nature or psyche or behavior or... whatever your imagination hints at! Main thing is, ENJOY! :)
