Archery is, above all, a philosophy aimed at self-bettering in all aspects of existence. Superficially regarded as a sport, it has always been much more than that. A deceivingly simple action of drawing the string and releasing the arrow requires hard training to an incredibly fine detail, because hitting the target means being able do repeat the move exactly the same way - every time. And then, there are also the external factors... all too frustrating for about 98% of people...

Arjuna... at Kuruksetra he had the best possible carriage driver, and besides he was told that the enemy has already been destroyed. ;) Thanks for your kind comment!

Proud to say I won in the Archery Challenge, but VERY surprised about the meagre number of entries. I always thought the sport generated a lot of photos... at least that was my experience, since many archers I know regularly took photos, also there were rarely any observers without a camera. So what happened here?

Location
The photo was made at the Archery training ground Pesjakovina in Zagreb (Croatia)Time
25-Jun-09 09:48:45 and the terrain orientation (East - West) makes it possible to practice in various kinds of light (here, it shows the added difficulty of shooting against the Sun).Lighting
This time in the morning one can practice shooting against the Sun, useful for various kinds of competition. In the afternoon, the targets will be lighted and the shooting conditions will be different. Same with taking photos; and Daylight was the only light here.Equipment
Photo was shot out of hand, using Olympus Superzoom (SP570UZ) with no added gear.Inspiration
Archery might appear nigh static to casual observers, but it is actually choc-full of interesting themes, and many archers use cameras often and regularly. One can take photos and study certain various circumstances later. For others, the interest will be mainly in the social aspect of things. Archers are usually very autonomous and in the same time intense social animals, so there are themes and situations galore - directly or indirectly related to sport, does not matter. You might say that the sport attracts folks with similar interests, so there's always plenty of photos.Editing
The photo has been re-framed somewhat, and one segment was copy-pasted with additional explanation along the top rim, but nothing much needed be done; the camera did its job okay!In my camera bag
I find it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag. So I load my photo vest with whatever I might need for my photo session, walk or trip, while my photo bags usually keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. The vest's many pockets usually contain two cameras, spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one photo clamp standing in for a tripod. Recently I include a small action camera, mainly for its wide field of view and resistance to water and weather. The vest also has large-lens pockets that contain a small water bottle, sandwich, or a bar of chocolate if I plan on being out for the whole day. There is about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. My smartphone comes along too. It has yet another spare camera, but more importantly the Spirit Level App wich I use to make the phone a perfectly horizontal surface under my camera. This is essential for panoramic sweeps. The app is free, and requires no extra permissions whatsoever. The large back pocket of the vest is reserved for a lightweight rain poncho. If the weather suddenly plays up, the poncho neatly covers all. Using the tools mentioned above, much can be improvised along the way, so that's all I need to make photos.Feedback
Shooting archery training or competition, indoors or out, try to avoid flash! In general, do not do anything that would disturb the shooter[s]. Archers need plenty of concentration and flashes and clicks can be pretty bewildering to anyone engaged in making the shot. If you want to do something that you suspect might disturb the shooter, please approach and ask first. Use the opportunity to explain the purpose of your photos, and always position yourself behind the shooting line. Use a soundless camera or mode, especially if you plan to catch the moment of arrow release. In short, do not disturb the archers and you'll gather more and better photos! :)
