A large underwater rock with its ever-growing population of lake shell life. As the shells are in essence the water cleaners, their presence might be seen in two ways: either the water is getting cleaner (when the individual shells are smallish), or the water is less clean (when the shells are bigger than normal for their sort) which means they have ample food to grow.
For example, the usual sea mussels would grow to be about two inches (5cm) in length, but there are some places where their size would be 6-7" (15cm+)! Such gianst I have seen growing on the buoy chains of oil industry installations. These mussels are of course inedible, but confirm the fact they can grow from various pollutants.
NOTE: Be very careful with shell food! Their bodies accumulate heavy metals, detergent remains, and other bad chemistry.
