This image almost didnt happen. I WENT to Oregon to shoot this specific rock. This was where I wanted to go and what I wanted to shoot. This is typically a sunset shot.... but the evening we arrived, we were socked in. I usually to to get SOMETHING, but it was just hideously ugly! So I went to dinner and to bed.

My wife wakes me up- Dave, there's Blue Sky! So I hike down to the beach, and it looks pretty nice! It is misting slightly, with bold clouds in the background. THEN the sun pops up and the rainbow pops up! I race around trying to get a few angles, and then I fall back to this framing, and that's when I see the double rainbow.

So its NOT the normal, sunset shot most people shoot here.... so don't give up, shoot what you get!

This is a re-edit of an earlier image.

Behind The Lens

Location

This is near Bandon Oregon. I have seen a lot of images of this space (called "Wizard Hat"), and I wanted to try my hand at it. Because it is a west coast beach, the ideal shot here is sunset. We got there in the evening, and it was overcast, and there was no way at all to get a good image. So we had a great sea food dinner in Bandon, and went to bed. The next morning, my wife woke me up at 6 AM and said, "Dave, the sun is out!" I will be honest, I did not think we would get much of anything, but what the heck- we traveled 1000 miles to GET here, I can walk 1000 yards to shoot it. The beach is below 150-200 foot cliffs, so I was not thinking we could get ANYTHING of sunrise. But as we walked down, the pregnant dense colors really interested me, and I started shooting. Then it started drizzling, and again I was thinking the better of shooting. And then the rainbow appeared. It was so bright and clear I could not believe it. I knocked off a few shots just to make sure I got SOMETHING.... then I backed up and started working on a good comp. Luckily I had a 15mm, and when I backed up, I saw I could get this, side to side. I have been working a lot in single point comps recently, and I thought that might be the killer shot for this, so I worked it until I got the single point, with a cool foreground and middle ground. I would have liked a different mid-ground comp, but the rainbow dictated that.... and this works.

Time

This was 6 AM or so...

Lighting

Lighting MAKES this image.... and I had nothing at all to do with it. I just got lucky!

Equipment

This was shot with a D810 and a tamron 15-30 set to 15. Shot on a tripod- I would have shot this with a 3 or 5 image bracket to get the best exposure. Colors usually pop more underexposed, and I do not think the contrast was too wide... so the bracket was to get the deep colors, not to expand the exposure range. PROBABLY used a wireless remote, but I could not swear to it.

Inspiration

Other images, mainly work by Nick Page. This is nothing like Nicks work (I do like Nick, but I try not to copy him!)

Editing

I think I used three virtual copies of the same exposure for this, each developed different. One would have been worked for the clouds, one for the haystacks, and one for the rainbows themselves. Layered and composited in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Generally, everything I need. Bag was left in the hotel on this one. I was on the beach with just the camera and legs. No bag used in this instance.

Feedback

Like so many of my images, the lesson here is DON'T GIVE UP. When you get somewhere and it isn't what you expect, DEAL WITH IT, don't just walk away. Change your goals, work out new comps, or just wait. Time will change everything! But don't just walk away. Really- so many of my best images I was ready to give up on, but I just kept shooting.
