Location
This was taken at the Kubota Garden in Seattle, Washington.Time
This was taken in the mid-afternoon so I could get the backlighting through the leaves.Lighting
I took this on a lightly overcast day so I could get good backlighting but not overwhelm the contrast.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D500 camera, Nikon wide angle lens, and a small tripod.IInspiration
I had seen some great photos of a Japanese Maple in a Portland, Oregon garden and wanted to see if I could also produce something with stunning color.Editing
NoIn my camera bag
I change up what I carry depending on where I am going and what photo I have visualized ahead of time. For gardens I usually have my Nikon D500 camera with a Nikon DX 10-24 wide angle, Nikon DX 18-55 normal zoom, and a Nikon DX 85mm micro lens. If going for wildlife and birds, I also take my Nikon DX 55-300 zoom. I carry various filters but seldom use any except for polarizing filters.Feedback
Plan for the right time of year and day so you have the leaf color you want and the backlighting that works for you. Try different angles and lens and if at first you don't succeed, try again another day.
