Location
I took this photo at the Oedsee in the beautiful Almtal (Alm valley) in Upper Austria in fall.Time
When I'm doing landscape photography I prefer the times around sunset and especially around sunrise to get a moody and soft light which gives it a special touch and avoids exposure problems. I need to get up long before sunrise to be prepared and having enough time to set up the composition I want. Notthing can be more depressing in nature photography than having the best light but missing the time to set up everything properly.Lighting
The sun was rising behind me and as I know this place very well I've waited for the clouds in the background to catch the soft light of the rising sun and to dye the trees in its color as well. I've hoped the the colored clouds would reflect in the calm lake and everything worked well.Equipment
I've used a Canon 5d Mark iii and a Canon 16-35/4 LS IS - a combination I really like together with a Sirui tripod and ball head. I've used polarization filter on my lens to play with the reflections in the lake until I had the result I wanted.Inspiration
First you must know: I love this lake! It's a lonely playe and it's some kind of meditation to be there and wait for the best light followed by the excitement of taking photographs. Though it's not exciting every time. I've been there so many times distributed over like seven years. It's a 2 hours drive followed by a walk and you only have two weeks in autumn where you can get there - and autumn is the best time to take photographs there. And weather is not all to consider - the water level is very important too. Sometimes I went there and the rocks were below water level...so I came back again the following year. So I've tried and tried to have the conditions I wanted and always had the compostion in mind - and on this day everything was perfect!Editing
I'm always using the RAW format - so I develop them in Lightroom and use Photoshop with Color Efex Pro to refine my landscape photos. One exposure would have been enough to get a very good photo, but using a second one for the sky and mixing them together with masked layers in Photoshop made it an even better one. I don't use this technique every time, but I just wanted to get the best out of it and I don't like to use HDR software - so I do that manually. In my camera bag
Canon 5d Mk III, Canon 16-35/4 L IS, Canon 50/1.4, Canon 70-200/4 L IS, Canon 135/2 L, Canon 180/3.5 L, bean bag, Sirui tripod, ND Filters, gradient filters, polarization filterFeedback
If you think of a picture you want to photograph don't give up. Even if you haven't the conditions to shoot it in several tries you will have them one day and you will enjoy that feeling, but don't forget to be prepared. Missing such an opportunity because you were to lazy to get out of the bed or missing something in your setup will get you depressed :). So try to have your composition in mind and set up everything and just wait for the light you want. And please don't forget to level your camera!
