Texture on the rocks is powerful the lines/motion is strong but gentle I like the cross movement of the water from the right through the rocks that lead the viewer's eye to the other shore. Personal to my taste are 1. the Rule of Thrids which is nicely displayed here and 2. Blue and brown go together like bread and butter.

Location
I had been planning this sunrise shoot at Scarborough North Beach for quite a while waiting for the sun to rise behind the castle and it had to be low tide with a decent weather forecast and not interfere with work and on Saturday 28th December everything seemed to be perfect so I set off quite early so I could scout the beach for some interesting foreground interest because the sand is always shifting. I have since been back and most of these rocks are buried under the sand.Time
I set off about 6:00 am it being about half an hour’s drive to this location, when I arrived it was still dark so I put on my head torch got my gear and headed off to the beach I thought I would check around for some nice foreground interest before the sky started to colour up coming across this location at about 7:15amLighting
Lighting conditions were quite tricky with it being quite dark so I used a Lee 0.6 graduated ND filter to keep the lights from being overexposed.Equipment
Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, tripod, cable release, Lee 0.6 Graduated ND filterInspiration
I planned a shoot at Scarborough North beach hoping to catch the sun rising above the castle and as always I arrived early to get a feel for the location and set everything up and while I was checking the comp in live view I really liked the way the clouds had cleared leaving the silouhette of the castle against the clear blue skyEditing
First it was imported to lightroom to set the camera profile and make sure the horizon is straight before adjusting the highlights and shadows then export to photoshop to set threshold for black and white then I reduced noise with neat image plugin the last job is to sharpen with high pass and that’s itIn my camera bag
Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EOS 7D, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM Lens, 0.3, 0.6 x2, 0.9 x2 hard graduated Lee filters, 0.6 ND filter, Big Stopper, Little Stopper, Circular polariser, landscape circular polariser, manual white balance card, misc cleaning productsFeedback
Scarborough north beach is always changing and one thing I have learned from my experiences at Scarborough is to always get to locations early so I can get a feel for the place and find the best spots with good foreground detail. I always use the photographer’s ephemeris to check sun direction and keep up to date with the weather forecast, last but not least I use the UK tides app to make sure that it’s safe to be on the beach
