Location
this photo was captured on Hornsea Beach a place full of inspiration with all the different shaped Groyns there is always an image to be had whether it is low tide, high tide or anywhere in between, I visit this location on the East Yorkshire coast in the UK regularly and it never seems to dissapointTime
I arrived on location at 6:00 am looking to capture the pre sunrise light but the best light happened after sunrise when the sun disappeared behind the clouds when this image was taken at 7:29am on a beautiful September morningLighting
I just used a lee 0.6 hard grad over the sky to help reduce the exposure for the brighter skyEquipment
Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, tripod, cable release and Lee 0.6 Graduated ND filterInspiration
I had just set up a shot in a different part of the beach using a big stopper so while a 240 second shot was being captured I wandered around the beach and came across these groynes with the wonderful water motion around them so as soon as my Long exposure finised I moved to this locationEditing
I always import to lightroom to make minor adjustments to highlights, shadows, blacks and whites then go to the tone curv section and drag the curve to an s shape before going to lense corrections where I just click the boxes for enable profile correction and remove chromatic abberation then I export to PS to clone out any dust bunnies then I usually adjust levels and sharpen using high pass and thats itIn my camera bag
Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EOS 7D, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM Lens, 0.3, 0.6 x2, 0.9 x2 hard graduated Lee filters, 0.6 ND filter, Big Stopper, Little Stopper, Circular polariser, landscape circular polariser, manual white balance card, misc cleaning products and a hot shoe spirit levelFeedback
the night before a shoot I always check the weather forecast, tide times cloud maps and the photographers ephimeris for sunrise direction so I can be as prepared as possible then on the morning of the shoot I always arrive on location early so I can take my time setting up and sorting out my composition also it gives me time get a feel for the place then its just a case of being patient and waiting for the light to materialise one thing in my bag that I love is my hot shoe spirit level it just makes setting up in the dark so much easier and at £2.99 it is probably the cheepest item in my bag
