Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this image on Hornsea Beach in East Yorksire UK, a location that I visit regularly because I love the wide variety of different shaped groyns and theres always plenty of waves giving good water motion

Time

I set off to Hornsea about 4:45 am arriving about quarter past five but it was about 6:am when I captured this image it was a beautiful morning and I had the beach to myself I could not believe my luck.

Lighting

the sun was just peaking on the horizon so I turned the camera away from it and used a two stop gradual ND filter to lift the foreground

Equipment

Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, tripod, cable release, Lee 0.6 Graduated ND filter

Inspiration

I had been to this location the week before and after finishing my shoot I had a walk around and came across these wonderfully shaped groyns when the tide was out and decided they would be great to shoot with waves crashing around them so planned to go back the following week when it would be high tide at sunrise

Editing

First it was imported to lightroom to set the camera profile and correct some lense distortion before reducing the highlights a fraction and lifting the shadows Ithen set Black and white before making a slight s shape in the tone curve a sharpen and a little noise reduction

In my camera bag

Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EOS 7D, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM Lens, 0.3, 0.6 x2, 0.9 x2 hard graduated Lee filters, 0.6 ND filter, Big Stopper, Little Stopper, Circular polariser, landscape circular polariser, manual white balance card, misc cleaning products

Feedback

I always plan and prepare well checking weather forcasts, cloud maps and tide times before setting off to a location, I always arrive early at least an hour before sunrise so I am not rushing about and I can set up then wait for that moment when the light is just right, sometimes it does not happen and other times it is magical like the morning of this shot.
