Great use of warm and cool, dark & light, foreground-background. An excellent shot.

I arrived at Saltwick bay about an hour before sunset and was quite disappointed because the tide had not gone out as far as I had hoped and the sky was quite dark also it was raining quite heavy out to sea and there was already two togs on the beach, I nearly got back in the car to head up to Whitby but being quite stubborn I decided to try to get the shot I had planned. Once I got own to the beach I could see that if I was careful I would be able to clamber over some very slippery rocks to get round a small headland to the wreck, on arrival the water had just receded leaving the shale rock wet bringing out the beautiful blue tones and the clouds started to colour up nicely I grabbed a few test shots then the sun dropped below the clouds, one of those evenings that you never want to end.Time
I arrived at about 8:00pm hoping to capture the setting sun there were two other togs on the beach but with it being quite a struggle to get to the wreck I had it to myself until the tide had retreated further but by then the best of the light had goneLighting
Lighting conditions were quite tricky with the sun so bright and the rest of the sky being quite dark so I used a Lee 0.6 graduated ND filter to reduce the brightness of the sun and lift the foreground thinking I would lift the shadows in ppEquipment

I have been to Saltwick Bay many times but always at sunrise and I had always wanted to capture a sunset which is at its best from June to August when it is at its most northerly point and on this day the weather forcast and tide were favourable. When I arrived it was cloudy but I decided to head down to the wreck and hope for some nice sunset light, by the time I got down there the sky was colouring up nicely so I got into position took a few test shots then waited for the sun to drop below the clouds and when it happened the light was superbEditing
First it was imported to lightroom to set the camera profile and correct some lense distortion before reducing the highlights a fraction and lifting the shadows once this was completed I exported to Photoshop to set threshold for black and white also to reduce saturation a fraction then I reduced noise with my neat image plugin lastly the image was sharpened using a high pass and that’s itIn my camera bag

Careful Planning and preparation such as looking at images from the area on the internet always make things easier on location and although I go for specific shots I always look around for different aspects or patterns that I can use in my images, I have been to Saltwick Bay many times but the light is never the same twice I always like to get to a location early so I can soak up the atmosphere and look around for points of interest or unusual compositions then you just have to capture the one that everyone takes as well
