Location
Saltwick Bay is a place I go to regular for sunrise shots but I have been wanting to try a sunset shoot with the wreck in the foreground and the sun setting behind it for some time the trouble is it being on the East coast of the UK the best two months for this are June and July when sunsets are more to the north but either work, weather or the tide had been against me but on Saturday 13th July Sunset was about 2.5 hours after high tide the weather forecast looked pretty good so off I went.Time
I got to Saltwick Bay at about 7:00PM there were two other togs on the beach and the tide had not gone out as far as I would of liked so I nearly changed my mind thinking I would be better off going to Whitby but the sky looked to be shaping up nicely with rain out to sea so I made my mind up to stick to my original plan once I got onto the Beach I could see that with a bit of scrambling over the rocks that go round the edge of the headland I would be able to get where I wanted to be at the wreck of The Admiral von TrompeLighting
Lighting conditions were quite tricky with it being quite dark so I used a Lee 0.9 graduated ND filter to reduce the brightness of the afterglow and lift the foregroundEquipment
Canon EOS 5D Mark III,EF17-40mm f/4L USM,tripod, 2 stop hard graduated ND filter FL, 17mm apperture, F16 ISO, 100 SS, 5 secondsInspiration
I have been to Saltwick Bay many times but always at sunrise and I always wanted to capture a sunset which is at its beast when it happens at its most northerly point usually June and July and on this day weather and tide were favourable it was cloudy but looked to be colouring up nicely so I got into position took a few test shots then waited for the sun to drop below the clouds and when it happened the light was superbEditing
First it was imported to lightroom to set the camera profile and correct some lense distortion before reducing the highlights a fraction and lifting the shadows once this was completed I exported to Photoshop to set threshold for black and white also to reduce saturation a fraction then I reduced noise with my neat image plugin lastly the image was sharpened using a high pass and that’s itIn my camera bag

Careful Planning and preparation such as looking at images from the area on the internet always make things easier on location and although I go for specific shots I always look around for different aspects or patterns that I can use in my images, I have been to Saltwick Bay many times but the light is never the same twice I always like to get to a location early so I can look around for points of interest or unusual compositions and you just have to capture the one that everyone takes as well
