Amazing shot! So cool the way the birds provide a frame for the grazing animal. Congratulations on being a finalist!

I drove out to Mt. Airy and just got lost. This was at some farm during the last snow day.

Found this looking through the "In flight" contest and I gotta say you got gipped. Not to discredit the other photos but this is a superior photo. It tells a story. The composition is flawless. The colors are subtle and cool and wonderful. This photo rocks my socks off. How many times do you get to say that about a picture of a cow and geese?

Love the Canadian Geese! That many do not seem to be bothering the cow looking for something in the snow. Amazing. In the right spot at the right time!!

Location
When I want to go out and take photos for the day I will grab my gear, pick a direction and get lost. I run in to the neatest things when I just go some ware I have never bean. For this shot I just drove out to the country and took a bunch of back roads until I saw farmland. I think this is at a barn in Mt. Airy MD.Time
I believe it was around 3:30 pm when I spotted that cow. She was standing there eating grass while her calf was trying to nurse. I guess there was no milk left because the calf walked off in a disappointed huff. It was then I saw a couple of geese fly up and back down. When I moved in closer to investigate a wall of birds launched into the air. I waited there for a few minutes so they all would calm down and gather back on the ground. I then set my camera to the exposure I wanted. Switching the camera to burst mode, I took a few noisy steps forward and snapped off a volley of shots as the beautiful winged creatures filled the gray sky. I did not know about this perfect shot until I got home to develop them.Lighting
It was cloudy and snowing so there was not much light to work with. There was no sunlight casting any type of shadow. Therefore I cranked the ISO to 2000 and the aperture to f/14. That way I could bring out some contrast in order to separate my subject from the background. It also gave the geese a sharp outline and a deep color. I was using the 5D Mark III so I felt comfortable using that high of ISO. The 5D is excellent when it comes to ISO. You can crank that sucker up almost all the way and it still takes a great image without a lot of grain.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon 24-105 lens.Inspiration
The snow inspired me to find some old farms to shoot. As soon as I saw the flakes I was gone. To tell you the truth, I pretty much consider every day to be inspiring enough to take photos. Everything I look at now is being viewed through a lens. What I mean is, everything I look at now gets evaluated as a potential shot. If I don’t snap some shots on any given day, I consider it a loss. I actually had to teach myself that it was okay to do something without my camera. Photography is like a creative drug. Some days you just need a quick artistic fix.Editing
The post processing was the tricky part. I wanted it to look bold and creamy. It took me all day to get everything perfect. In my camera bag
When I go out to shoot, I want to be ready for anything. So I bring a big and heavy camera backpack. In this bag I have the following: Cannon 5D Mark III, Tamron 70 – 200 Lens, Tamron 15 – 30 Ultra-wide angle Lens, Tamron 90mm Macro Lens, Canon 24 – 105 Lens, (2) Canon 600EX-RT, and the Canon ST-E3-RT. In my SUV I will have: (2) Flash stands, Large 7ft tripod, Small 4ft tripod, (2) umbrellas, and (1) 5-1 reflector.Feedback
