Interesting concept, not unlike some music album covers I've seen. I like it!

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my brother’s house. I had to talk my brother and sister-in-law into posing for the shot, but they did a great job. I had to clean up some toys and set up a few things, but the shot came out looking nice. Now this was my crop frame Rebel T5i with a kit lens, so I could not fit everything into the shot. I had to stand outside the front door in the rain to get the shot I wanted.

Time

I took this shot around 7:30pm I think.

Lighting

This is the crazy part of the story behind this image. This was not my first choice for the assignment. I first tried to photograph someone standing under a streetlamp in my neighborhood. But during my late-night photo session, someone apparently called the police and told them a person was going around photographing peoples windows. So 2 of Montgomery County’s finest swooped in with lights blazing. After showing them ware I lived and what I was actually doing the officers apologized and went on their way. After that I decided to shoot the assignment indoors.

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel T5i with the kit lens and a house lamp.

Inspiration

Now this image actually has a story behind it. When I decided to go back to college, I chose graphic design as my major because that was all I knew at the time. During my second semester, I was at my dad’s house helping him move some stuff into a different room for storage. After finding a spot for the last box of junk, I noticed my father’s older Canon Rebel just sitting there in the closet. Unfortunately, I was unaware of the evil seductive powers of today’s digital camera. After I picked it up and played around with it I was hooked. The camera could not shoot RAW, but it was digital and a great camera to learn on. I began photographing everything I could when I had the time. I also began researching successful photographers. I found that I loved conceptual photography and design. So the first photographer I researched was Gregory Crewdson. I don’t like normal looking photos that tell a story. I like photos that invite you to come up with your own story. So the following semester I bought a new Rebel T5i, and took an Introduction to Digital Photography class. One of our assignments was to pick a favorite photographer and emulate there style. So this is my version of Gregory Crewdson style.

Editing

I used some a photo filters and gave it a painterly effect. I also removed some objects in Photoshop. The base color was actually a happy accident. I did not know how to use lite back then, so I set a basic house lamp in the hallway to light Katie’s face. Unfortunately the tape I used to modify the light was blue and colored the whole hallway. I also did not know that the dining room light would make a neat looking design on the sealing like that.

In my camera bag

Now I use my Canon 5D III and a variety of lenses. I like to use my Tamron 90mm Macro most of all.

Feedback

You don’t need expensive equipment to take an interesting photo. You just need time, patients, and know how to use your camera.
