Behind The Lens

Location

My adorable nephew on haircut day at “My Barbershop”, in downtown Bethesda Maryland. It’s a great place to go for kids. The barber is very quick and very good. She also lets me bring in my big camera in for some precious photos.

Time

It was around 10:00am when I took them down to the barbershop. They had the day off for some reason so I was watching them for my brother. We had a great time.

Lighting

Didn’t do anything special for lighting. They had 2 full-length windows in front of the shop which let in a lot of natural light. They also had the shop well-lit with lights around the 3 large mirrors which gave Tyler a nice rim light.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark III and a Tamron 72-200 lens. Did not need a flash for this one.

Inspiration

I am a big fan of 2 completely different, yet strikingly similar artists. The firs is Norman Rockwell. A well-known painter that had the ability to capture the American culture with a few strokes of his brush. The other is the photographer Gregory Crewdson. He had the ability to create a more darker and mysteries version of life. They are two different artists in completely different fields of study. However, they both share one very important similarities. They both created scenes that invite a story rather than telling one. A good number of photographers create images that tell a story from beginning to end. For example; when you look at the iconic photos documenting the terrible “Dust Bowl” taken by Dorothea Lange in the 1930s. The photos capture the pain, struggle and sadness in the eyes of the people who lived through it. So, when you examine the image you will see that there is very little information given because the viewer already knows the backstory. They know what happened, what they went through and that they survived. The image just confirms the conclusion of that terrible event. In contrast, Gregory Crewdson and Norman Rockwell create scenes that show what has happened after some event you don’t know about. There is a lot of detail in the photos and paintings that let viewer peace together the story and come to their own conclusion.

Editing

I wanted to highlight every crinkle in his scrunched little face. I just ran it through Lightroom for the basics and Photoshop for some dodging and burning.

In my camera bag

When I go out to shoot, I want to be ready for anything. So I bring a big and heavy camera backpack. In this bag I have the following: Cannon 5D Mark III, Tamron 70 – 200 Lens, Tamron 15 – 30 Ultra-wide angle Lens, Tamron 90mm Macro Lens, Canon 24 – 105 Lens, (2) Canon 600EX-RT, and the Canon ST-E3-RT. In my SUV I will have: (2) Flash stands, Large 7ft tripod, Small 4ft tripod, (2) umbrellas, and (1) 5-1 reflector.
