Love the lighting. Any chance you could share the placement of the lights? I'm trying to learn how shots like this are created, and find myself studying them to try and "see" the light. Thanks in advance.

This shot was taken at Union 206 Studios in VA. The wonderful model I am photographing is LuxBot Lächeln and she is wonderful. This was at the beginning of my photography experience. I only to one elective class for photography, the rest I had to learn on my own and the only wat to do that is to get out there and practice. LuxBot was an amazing and such a professional model to work with. She even worked with me when setting up the lighting making sure it looked perfect.Time
It was around 7pm before we began setting up the lights. The actual shooting began around 8pm. I was still quite new in the land of photography so I took my time setting up. Luckily this session was split between me and a few photo buddies as a training session. We all took turns setting up deferent lighting scenarios. Together I think we all learned a lot that day.Lighting
When I began learning about photography, I (like most newcomers) thought that great images where captured using expensive equipment and the magic took place in Photoshop. Boy was I in for a rude awakening. Just because I learned how to perform some neat tricks in Photoshop did not mean I knew how to take a great photo. I found out that in order to create a great image you need perfect lighting on your subject. Lighting was everything. Photoshop and Lightroom are used to enhance and exploit a great image, not to fix a bad one. After learning that simple fact, things began to fall into place for me. I have not mastered lighting by any stretch of the imagination. Instead, I struggle with it every time I shoot. But I love it when I figure it out.Equipment
I used my trusty Canon EOS T5i and the standard 18-55 kit lens. I might have used my Canon 24-105 at that time but I am not sure. I also used an Alien Bee strobe with a large Octagon soft box and a beauty dish.Inspiration
For this shot my friends and I did not have a specific idea in mind. We were more focused on the lighting techniques. However; when I am shooting for fun I usually let the model and there outfit determine the look of the image. More specifically; I let the outfit and the look of the model dictate her expression, form and movement in the shot. For example; if a model has a down home wholesome features with some sexy clothing, I will tell her to give me a look of innocence. If the model has a stronger presents like dark hair and tattoos, I will have her show some attitude. I always try to capture and show real personality.Editing
I did quite a bit of post-production for this shot. I wanted to make this image look like it belongs in a magazine. This was actually one of the first times I used Lightroom. At that point in time I only knew how to use Photoshop. So every time I had to edit a bunch of shots it took me all day. Editing this image taught me how Lightroom and Photoshop interact with each other. So I used Lightroom to adjust the lighting, color, and some of the skin. After that I took it into Photoshop to remove imperfections and make the skin look flawless. In my camera bag
When I go out to shoot, I want to be ready for anything. So I bring a big and heavy camera backpack. In this bag I have the following: Cannon 5D Mark III, Tamron 70 – 200 Lens, Tamron 15 – 30 Ultra-wide angle Lens, Tamron 90mm Macro Lens, Canon 24 – 105 Lens, (2) Canon 600EX-RT, and the Canon ST-E3-RT. In my SUV I will have: (2) Flash stands, Large 7ft tripod, Small 4ft tripod, (2) umbrellas, and (1) 5-1 reflector. But if i am shooting in the studio, I will bring (2) White Lightning strobes.Feedback
Practice, Practice, Practice. The only way a photographer improves there craft is with knowledge and practice. How to use a camera and how to modify light can be taught in a book but it must be acted out in the field in order to understand it. Push yourself, find your strengths and eliminate your weaknesses. I try to fix one problem a week. I guess I look at photography like a game of golf, you are only competing with yourself. If you can't get that perfect look you want, then fix it. Find out what you are doing wrong and fix it. Once you have figured out how to interact with your camera equipment and the environment around you, you can work on finding that perfect style. Thats how I see it anyway.
