Location
This image was captured on a cold winters morning at a beautiful area called South Ripley in Queensland Australia.Time
This image was capture just minutes after sunrise with the sun just risen above the horizon. It is always a magical time of day.Lighting
The hardest thing about this image was the sky compared to foreground. With the sun fast rising it left a very small window to capture both without blowing out the other. I aimed my focusing square directly at the suns location and set half a stop over exposed to allow the foreground some extra light. It created a more silhouette feel with the trees which i really liked. It also meant just a small raise in shadows on LR and the foreground was clear and visible without loosing the sky.Equipment
On this morning I used a Nikon D750 with the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 lens. I also used a wireless Pixel Opallis remote to help reduce shake and a Pro-Mster FW29T Tripod which is really sturdy and easy to adjust in low light locations.Inspiration
I have a real passion for nature, landscapes and severe weather photography. I think we overlook simple beauty's like a sun flare behind a beautiful tree or golden grass lit by a low angle sun. To capture these moments can be a gamble as many weather and location factors need to be in place. But the sense of accomplishment when it works is worth all the hours trying.Editing
Yes but only very small. I raised the shadows barely a quarter to help balance the foreground with the sky and I raised the clarity a tiny bit to improve the sharpness of the grass. Besides that I was very lucky as the sun glowed a beautiful golden yellow through the fog making life easier. In my camera bag
At current I carry two cameras, The Nikon D750 (Full Frame) and the Nikon D7100 (Crop Sensor). For the D750 I have the amazing Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 as well as the Nikon 24-85mm f/4.5. For the D7100 I have the Tamron 10-24mm wide angle, Tamron 18-200mm f/4.5, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and the Nikon 18-300mm lens. I also carry a Patchmaster Lightning trigger, A Pixel Opallis wireless remote and plenty of cleaning gear and cloths as well as back up batteries.Feedback
Best advise is find low areas prone to fog and frost in the colder months. Also check water areas like ponds, dams and creeks as they can be popular in the winter months for thick low fog. Keep track of the time you have the lens exposed to the cold weather as it may fog up and you may miss a shot. Carry a good lens warmer or alcohol spray designed for lenses as it slows the fogging down if wiped over every 20 minutes or so. But most of all just enjoy and realise it may take twenty attempt's to get the shot, but it's worth it.
