Location
This image was captured from the beautiful Mt Cootha lookout that faces North as-well as East including a full view of the City of Brisbane Qld Australia.Time
This was captured early in the evening as the sun had set behind me to the west so the darkness was better and the storm stood out more with the lighting of the CBD and housing.Lighting
This night was a very lightning active night. From such a high vantage point it meant photographing was very interesting and challenging. To shoot level with the storm as opposed to aiming upwards meant a higher risk of over exposing the buildings if not careful as the sky was very dark until a lightning strike.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100 with a Nikon DX 55-300mmon a Sirix Digital Max3550 tripod, and a Pixel Oppilas wireless remote.Inspiration
Being a sufferer of Bipolar and Depression I love storm photography. The anger yet beauty, The excitement yet fear it creates. It is like the earth showing it has the same emotion's as i do at times. It has had a very medicinal affect on me and helped be with my mental health. It has changed life for the better and given me focus again through a lens.Editing
I adjusted the sharpness and lowered the brightness. As it was a long exposure it created a bit too much of a glow and flare through the buildings. Not much at all was needed to be changed so I was lucky. In my camera bag
I normally carry a Nikon D7100. A Tamron SP 10-24mm wide angle lens. A Nikon 18-55m lense. Nikon DX 55-300mm lens. A Pixel Oppilas wireless remote. A Patchmaster lightning trigger. A Cokin ND8 neutral Density filter and brackets. For cleaning i carry DSLR Pro kit Lenspen and Camera Armour cleaning kit.Feedback
I found because of the lighting from the city it meant i stayed at ISO-100 and F/4.5. I auto focus on the largest building as it was in the center and allowed the most depth. Then switch to manual so I could shoot continuous long exposures without missing shot's due to the camera attempting to refocus. If I was out in the bush I would have went with Iso 200-400 and gone 20-30 sec exposure instead of 15 sec depending on how frequent the lightning is. Also lightning is deadly and unpredictable so always know your surroundings and be careful. You can not share the beauty if you get struck and loose your life. So if needed I recommend shoot from your car using a remote and stay away from large trees.
