I received a poem written by one of my former colleagues from long ago. Here it is, (in my translation):

TO HIM

If you'd enjoyed Yesenin
or have read just half of Anna Karenina
you would've left Ukraine in peace.
If you were of the sort
which studied Tolstoy
you'd have refrained from any battle.
If you admired Puschkin
you would know the truth,
and if you laughed with Ilf and Petrov
you could tell flowers from weed.
If you just once cried with Tchaikovsky
you would not step across any borders
and if Dostoevsky was at hand
when any doubts plagued you,
you wouldn't have lost that wide, beautiful russian soul
and surely would not kill anyone.
