Sahara (arabic: alsahra') means The Moon, desert, wilderness, emptiness.
It is also a popular female name, derived from the Arabic word for "desert" in the feminine irregular form (the singular ṣaḥra', plural ṣaḥārā).
Sahara desert appears in several different ways. Many areas are rocky, but prevalently it is covered in sand. This was photographed near Aswan (Egypt).
