A chain of hand-forged links, the way chains were made long before the industry discovered the automatic production. Every link was formed, added to the sequence, and hewn closed while red-hot.
One can still see such chains around - even in seawater - stubbornly refusing to corrode away. This one was found in a Dalmatian fisher village several decades ago, but I would bet it is still in use.
