Driving around Capitol Reef, one of the most striking buildings is the old barn. It's super photogenic, and the vista in front of the barn is incredible. The problem- every one has shot that picture. I really do not like doing the same shot as everyone else. But I shot it anyway, because it is very pretty.

As I was walking around the barn, I kept looking for something new. The barn doors were open and the horses were out. I walked into the barn and knew I had found my own image. The door frame perfectly surrounded the shot I wanted. I still get the view, and I still get the rustic nature of the barn. But I could tell that story in my own way.

The image was shot in the Winter of 2017. It was shot with a Nikon D810 and an Tamron 15-30 lens. The image was shot at ISO64 with a shutter speed of 1-30sec at ƒ-18. This was shot hand-held because of mobility issues.

The ISO was chosen first to allow the finest noise possible. It being outdoor, I knew I had a LOT of light so I could expect a deep depth of field and small aperture. I did not want any shake so I chose the shutter speed of 1-30 first, because I felt I could hold a 15mm steady with no hand shake at that speed. This gave me an f-stop of 18, which I felt was perfectly workable in this situation.

The dynamic range of this shot was a bit wider than a camera sensor can reproduce... even my D810! Luckily the D810 has a small flash on it, so I popped that up for a little fill flash. It was still a wide DR, but it was fixable in LR with that kiss of light from the flash.

Prints of various sizes are available on the Fine Art America website as well as the artists personal site (http:--davekochphoto.com).

This is exceptional shooting. Not everyone shoots it like this. This one pope out. Where is Capitol Reef? I assume it is in the Southwest.

Captiol Reef is one of 5 national parks in Utah.... in Southern Utah, actually. I think CR is the most northern of the 5. Arches and Canyonlands are across the street from each other in Moab (South East Utah) Bryce is north of Zion in South Western Utah. Capitol Reef is north of them all, and almost as west as Zion/Bryce (this is all from memory, not using a map, so I migth be a bit off!)
