This photo was taken in national park "The Veluwe" in Holland.Time
It was in the morning of a sunny but cold winters day, about 9 am.Lighting
The early morning sun was still low at the horizon and casted a nice shadow of the mushroom on the snow.Equipment
I took this photo with my wonderful Lumix DMC-TZ60, a great small camera with a Leica lens, easy to carry with you and with lots of possibilities, manual as well as intelligent automatic. I didn't use any extra equipment.Inspiration
I was enjoying a sunny winters day with my wife in a wonderful national park called "The Veluwe" in Holland. We decided to go out early to avoid all the footsteps in the snow which can spoil a good photo in my opinion... After half an hour I saw this little fighter sticking it's head up above the snow, it was the only distraction in a wide white field of untouched snow. Normally we don't have mushrooms in this time of year, so I wanted to take a nice photo of this wonderful combination of autumn and winter. The power of life is so strong...Editing
Actually I did quite some editing in Lightroom because I couldn't find the right manual settings to get the mushroom and the reflecting snow just right... I choose to focus on the snow, not to get my whites all burned. But as a result of that, my little mushroom turned out too dark and lifeless. Thanks to Lightroom I could edit this photo into a nice lifely and natural looking result!In my camera bag
I don't have any equipment in my bag (yet) I am a beginning photographer and I am learning to use a camera, to look for the good light, composition and point of view. One day when I know how to use and set the camera well enough, I will start to think about a bag filled with technical things instead of the need to understand photography first...Feedback
If you try to take a photo of a small subject on the ground you have to get your knees dirty... A photo of this mushroom taken from above wouldn't be a very exciting photo and would't show the mushroom as it realy is... A low point of view shows much more and creates a better perspective. When you are photographing snow there are two things that can easily go wrong; burned whites and too much blue! Try different settings, check your white balance and be careful not to have too much exposure! The best time of day to take photo's in general and in this case in particular is early in the morning and at the end of the day; "the Golden hour"! The light is softer and the low sun creates nice long soft shadows... I allways shoot a wider field to I have more freedom to choose a nice cropping. A save method to create a nice composition is the "Rule of thirds" Allow the subject a bit of space from the sides of your frame and play a little with more different croppings. Then choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them!
