Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Aljubarotta in Portugal, in a small street outside of the village where many old houses were abandoned.

Time

It was about 16 pm.

Lighting

I took this photo without any extra flash, the sun was coming from the side and just missed the door, creating a nice indirect lighting.

Equipment

I used my small wonderful Lumix DMC-TZ60 free out of hand.

Inspiration

I saw the cloth, closing the door and was fascinated by this mysterious and romantic sight. I love photos with a story and I was wondering what the story could be behind this door... The combination of structures and colors of the dirty cloth where such an intimate contrast with the old worn paint and wood, it drew my attention from afar. After taking a few photos, I wanted to go and look inside the house, but I just couldn't untie the knot... it didn't feel good.

Editing

I did very little post-processing, I cropped the photo and enhanced the contrast and color just a little bit.

In my camera bag

I don't have a bag of equipment... My love for natural beauty and spontanious composition is enough for the moment. I always carry my Lumix DMC-TZ60 with me, wich practically fits in my back pocket and I never have to worry about the extra equipment as I am in the beginning of the learning process of photography. One day when I know how to use and set the camera well enough, I will start to think about a bag filled with technical things instead of the need to understand how it works first...

Feedback

To take a photo like this one, you need nothing more than a good eye for detail and a drive to go where others don't go... There were a lot of tourists in that area, but this house was in a small street behind a stone wall wich everybody else seemed to ignore. Just look around you and be bewondered about the beautiful and crazy world we are living in. Walk with your head up and down... and see what is allready there to be seen. In this case I can give little advice as this scene was allready waiting for me, I just had to see it... When I walk through a village or anywhere else, I allways look around me very carefully to see the details of wich the world around me is build up. I try to look through a pinhole, without forgetting the whole picture. If you look at a subject to photograph, you have to try to realise what you want to achieve, Try to find the good light, the right point of view and the best composition... And most of all, take more shots with slightly different settings so you can choose the best one. Once you get home and open your laptop, the magic of today's world begins... I allways crop it later into the size and composition I like best. Crop the photo in different ways, so you can choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them!
