An incredible image of what appears to be a fascinating subject. I would maybe cropped the image tighter, but that's me. I somehow seem to crop all my images to 16/9. Well done.

Location
I was walking through an outdoor market In Malveira ( Portugal ) looking for a nice typical photo to shoot.Time
It was late in the morning, about 11.30 I think, I had just finished my coffee when I saw this old man at the closing of the morning market.Lighting
The natural lighting struck me, the late morning sun created deep and dark shadows with wonderful highlights.Equipment
I wanted to capture this old man without disturbing the moment. I liked the pose and his expression very much the way it was. Therefore I decided to take this photo "from the hip" at a distance of some 7 meters. It was just a lucky try, I took about 8 photo's without him noticing me, obviously without any extra equipment...Inspiration
I was inspired by the way this old market vendor was contemplating his life between the remains of his days work. The sun casted deep and dark shadows over him with beautiful highlights, wich added wonderfully to the drama of the scene. The tent cloth behind him was a great support as a background with lovely textures and fading shadows.Editing
Originally this was taken as a color photo but when I saw the possibilities when I got home, I decided to edit this one as a black and white photo... I edited in Lightroom and tuned many details and light intensities. I also cropped the photo from a much larger original because I had decided to take the photo "from the hip" without seeing what I was doing. In my camera bag
I don't have any equipment in my bag (yet) I am a beginning photographer and I am learning to use a camera, to look for the good light, composition and point of view. One day when I know how to use and set the camera well enough, I will start to think about a bag filled with technical things instead of the need to understand how it works first...Feedback
f you want to take a candid photo you have to be creative... look for a place to hide behind or like this one when there is nowhere to hide; take it "from the hip" while you look the other side, not to attrack the attention of your subject. I was holding my camera in one hand, beside my leg because I was standing excactly in front of this market vendor in plain sight. I always feel a little uncomfortable photographing people I don't know, so I try to take candid photos to avoid the eye contact. Because you can't plan the framing, you always have to crop a blind shot, that's why you have to shoot a wider area then the result you want to achieve. The settings of your camera can be done by choosing another subject at the same distance and the same light intensity, nearby the subject you eventually want to shoot... Crop and edit the photo in different ways, so you can choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them!
