St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church is a simple rectangular wood frame structure with a steeply pitched gable roof and an adjoining tower with a steep spire. Surrounded by coniferous trees and mountains, it is the only building left in the once-thriving community of Bennett Lake in British Columbia.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot from the White Pass and Yukon Railway car of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church located at Lake Bennett, British Columbia Canada very close to the Yukon Territory boarder.

Time

I am afraid the time stamp of the actual photo was on east coast time. So I am thinking is was close to noon.

Lighting

This was a train stop. Very small window of opportunity, so I couldn't wait for lighting changes. It simply was what it was.

Equipment

Nikon D7200. As far as the lens goes to be honest I am not totally sure but I believe it was my Nikkor 18-140mm zoom. No tripod and at the time the train was moving.

Inspiration

We had made a train stop at the little encampment where the church sits. We had time to walk up to the church and explore the area. So I had already taken a lot of shots. But then after boarding the train and leaving, we got a totally different view of the church with the snow covered mountains in the background. I knew I had to get that one last shot to go with the others.

Editing

The actual shot was awful. I had part of the train roof in it, it wasn't level, and there were other roofs of small buildings as well. I tonemapped it and used a little Photoshop magic to remove some of the other building roofs to give it more of a feeling of just a little church all by itself in such beautiful location.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D7100 and a D7200. I have a nice Nikkor 85-400mm zoom, wide angle 10-24mm, as well as the 18-140mm zoom that I took this shot with. I carry a Sirui tripod for when I travel. I should use it more than I do.

Feedback

This was truly the last shot before moving on. I could have so easily said this situation is not ideal so I don't want to waste my time. It's digital, take the shot. You can always delete it when you get home. Glad I turned around and toke the shot and I am honored that others appreciate it so much. Also this shot was taken at what I feel is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I have ever seen.
