Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at "The Butterfly Farm" in St. Maarten while we were on a tour.

Time

This shot was taken in early afternoon.

Lighting

We had a brief amount of time at this location. I could have stayed all day. The lighting bright sunshine and some ares of shade. Maybe some fill flash with the built in camera flash unit. Also this was within a netted enclosure and the netting helped with a little diffusion of the direct sunlight.

Equipment

Nikon D7100 with a 400 mm zoom. Shot at 1/320 sec. f/5.6 at ISO 400. I may have been using a little bit of fill flash with the built in camera flash.

Inspiration

Honestly, this was one of those "take as many shots as you can and hopefully you may have a few good ones when you are done" type situations. The place was pretty crowded and time was limited. I even ducked out of the lecture part to try and get more photo time. So I pretty much had to just take what I could get.

Editing

The image was taken in raw format. Any post processing was just some minor clarity, color, and shadow removal within Adobe Lightroom. I think what really helped this photo was how the final images was placed and cropped.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D7100 and a D7200. I have a nice Nikkor 85-400mm zoom, wide angle 10-24mm, as well as the 18-140mm zoom kit lens. t I carry a Sirui tripod for when I travel. I should use it more than I do.

Feedback

This was just an opportunity I stumbled upon. I took lots of shots. The beauty of digital is take lots of shots with different f stops and shutter speeds. You can always delete the bad ones. I tried to get a number of different angles and placing the subject and sun in different perspectives. It also helped that I had a subject to was oblivious to what I was doing or was just so use to people within the enclosure, he didn't care.
