Location
Photo was made through the windshield while driving along the road between Struga and Skopje, approaching Straza (the highest point on the way).Time
It was January 25th, 14:13:43, says the Exif, and I was on my way to Zagreb (Croatia); from here, another ~1000 kilometers to go...Lighting
One of the most beautiful lights there are; clear, wintry day with lots of snow all around! You can see the light quality from elements: 1/400th sec, f8, ISO 100 @ focal lenth of 6.2mmEquipment
An out-of-hand shot using a trusty little Canon D10, an all-round able camera that should be in everybody's pocket.Inspiration
I made a lot of photos during that trip, what for the reason of road scenes beauty, and also to have something to occupy my mind with, especially on long stretches of uneventful sections of the road. My corner of the World is very beautiful in all seasons, but winters can really be picturesque - like something out of old fables. The sceneries I was moving through between my starting point and destination would be inspirative enough for every Nature lover.Editing
Image was cropped to 16:9 format to accent the road and bring the roadsign to "proper" place in the frame. Otherwise, nothing else required change. In my camera bag
I keep repeating this, but I genuinely prefer a photo vest and its million pockets to any photo bag. Pockets can be better organized, and whatever weight the final load is, will be more symmetrically distributed over the shoulders. Within the vest pockets you will find my "main" camera (usually a bridge type, all-in-one), a "spare" camera (usually a watertight model compact), spare batteries for both, a stack of ND filters and a CPL filter. Small camera clamp is my stand-in for a tripod. There will also be a lenth of paracord string, a pocket knife, and a lighter. This is all I need to improvise whatever I might wish to do.Feedback
Point-and-shoot cameras are ideal for this kind of photos, as there is no fumbling with various commands which takes your attention away from the road. Wide-angle shots do not even require you to watch the monitor - just point the camera in general direction and try to execute the shot in the smoothest way you can. Take care not to lean your hand anywhere in the car. To avoid possible vibrations or bumps, shoot "from the shoulder". Don't ever swerve your attention from driving - not for a split second! It could be dangerous, especially if the road is frozen and slippery. Best stop alongside the safe stretch of the road, get out and make some shots. That way you avoid all the maybes. I'm aware it is not the best practice and admit that I'm sometimes too lazy to follow my own advice. But you should! Whatever you do, take all precautions - and be safe.
