Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made in Elenkamen on the Lake Ohrid coast.

Time

To be exact, on 04-Apr-11 at 13:10:00

Lighting

Shutter speed 1/200sec, Aperture f/14, ISO 160, 0.00 eV, Metering mode "Pattern", Flash did not fire, Focal length 18.6mm, White balance Daylight...

Equipment

Canon PowerShot D10, photo was shot out of hand. No added gear.

Inspiration

Swans often come to our coast to be fed and to enjoy the peaceful ambient. We've made friends with many of them, and they usually allow us to photograph them from very small distances. On occasion, some will try to nib at the camera, but rarely... and the D10 is pretty much immune to such attempts anyway. So, such photos are very likely to continue being possible. And such encounters are an instant inspiration in themself!

Editing

I did some slight frame-correcting crop, not much else. And of course, had to resize for upload to VB. That's about it.

In my camera bag

A standard question here gets a standard answer! So I have this answer ready, and just cleverly copy / paste! I find it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag. So I load my photo vest with whatever I might need for my photo session, walk or trip, while my photo bags usually keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. The vest's many pockets usually contain two cameras, spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one photo clamp standing in for a tripod. Recently I include a small action camera, mainly for its wide field of view and resistance to water and weather. My everyday underwater camera was used for this shot, because it is always along when I'm near the water. The vest also has large-lens pockets that contain a small water bottle, sandwich, or a bar of chocolate if I plan on being out for the whole day. There is about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. My smartphone comes along too. It has yet another spare camera, but more importantly the Spirit Level App to make the phone a perfectly horizontal surface under the camera. This is essential for panoramic sweeps. The app is free, and requires no extra permissions whatsoever. The large back pocket of the vest is reserved for a lightweight rain poncho. If the weather suddenly plays up, the poncho neatly covers all. Using the tools mentioned above, much can be improvised along the way, so that's all I need to make photos.

Feedback

Make friends of animals, and in time you will be able to take very close shots. Think nice thoughts, be calm and do not make any moves that might be interpreted as aggressive. Everything will then depend upon the trust you have managed to earn and establish, also the kind of animal you're trying to approach. Patience and love is the key... to make ANY model relax, and give you a chance for good photos!
