Sundogs or sun dogs, aka mock suns or "parhelia", are a pair of brightly colored spots, one on either side of the Sun. Sundogs form when sunlight is refracted by hexagonal plate-like ice crystals with their flat faces horizontally oriented.

Thanks, Andriy and thanks all of you for liking my photo! I guess the biggest privilege is seeing one's work appreciated, and I'm honored!

Behind The Lens

Location

Photo was made at Lake Ohrid promenade, Ohrid city, Macedonia.

Time

16:15:58 hrs, on Dec 24th, 2015... which is proper sunset time for our latitude in winter.

Lighting

The light was excellent the way it was - pure daylight, or what was left of it.

Equipment

Camera was a Nikon P610, I was shooting sitting on a bench (enjoying the sunset), watching silhouetted people walk by. Used no extra equipment.

Inspiration

The weather, the field of view, the fascinating lake... all that was an inspiration, and this is one of many photos shot at that time.

Editing

Beside little cropping and straightening of the horizon, there wasn't anything much to do. Excepting the resize of the final version for upload, that is.

In my camera bag

I use a photo vest for all the gear I carry, while my photo bags stay at home, guarding things I don't need. In the vest's million pockets there are two cameras, spare batteries, some ND and CPL filters, a photo clamp, a lighter, a sturdy pocket knife, and a length of paracord. Everything I decide to photograph I can do with those cameras and using other things which I use to improvise - if and when I have to.

Feedback

Forget the special hours for special themes, and simply shoot whatever you find interesting. Have all the focal lengths with you at all times. Even when you're out with intent to shoot landscapes, there will be something else... a bird, a snail, a bug... anything but landscape... so always be ready for Fortune's little surprise presents. We are merely registering seconds and time clips even shorter... These instances in our lives pass very quickly - and one-way-only. So you do not have to chase after your themes, as "all things come to those who wait"! Be playfully interested in all directions and in all moments. Beauty occurs at any time and often without any announcement, just be prepared to notice it. Most importantly: enjoy the Good Light!
