Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made near Sava river in the region of Galdovo - Sisak (Lonjsko Polje, Croatia), while inspecting the system of dams and levies which control the high-water protection of the area. The dams are topped with narrow roads and one can pass a number of kilometers through the beautiful scenery. I used to drive such round trips in weekends, gathering documentary and illustration photos for my pro editing work, and of course, for myself, at least twice in every season.

Time

Date/Time of the photo is 14-Apr-07 09:25:18

Lighting

Here you have it all: Shutter Speed 1/80 s, f/3.5, ISO 160, 0.00 eV, Metering Mode: Pattern, Flash Off, and Focal Length: 24.8 mm

Equipment

SONY DSC-R1 was my official and preferred camera at the time - an excellent model, very versatile for many different tasks. This one was shot with no add-on accessories, straight out of hand, as the light was good enough.

Inspiration

Inspiration is easily seen in the photo - the peaceful and silent beauty of the untouched nature that prevails everywhere around the human-built things (like dams and weirs, etc.).

Editing

Frankly, I can't remember doing anything about this photo that would be worth mentioning, save some cropping around the edges...

In my camera bag

For decades already I find it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag. So I load my photo vest with whatever I might need for my photo session, walk or trip. My photo bags usually stay home or in the car to keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. The vest's many pockets usually contain two cameras, spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one small photo clamp instead of a tripod. Sometimes I'll include a small action camera, mainly for its wide field of view and resistance to water and weather. The vest has pockets for big lenses that can hold a small water bottle, a sandwich, or a bar of chocolate if I plan on being out for the whole day. I always add about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. With these, much can be "mcgyvered" along the way, so that's all I need. Recently I make it even more comfortable for me, and take the essentials along in a waist pouch; a variable-volume McKinley. Simplicity and comfort; two best qualities for the most situations!

Feedback

Once in the area; move slowly, look around and carefully inspect every available angle for your photos. One of the POVs should be better than the others. Of course, you should have a versatile camera, able to record from Macro thru Telephoto... but you know it already! Use your time, and above all else - enjoy the place you're at. The shooting opportunities will reveal themselves!
