Behind The Lens

Location
This photograph of a group of Fungi was taken at Arlington Court near Barnstaple in Devon.
Time
The shot was taken at 15.34 on a fine November afternoon.
Lighting
The fungi was growing at the top of a steep grassy bank at the edge of woodland so the light entering the shaded area was quite soft. When I climbed the bank to position myself for the photograph I noted that there was soft light entering the area through the trees behind the subject.
Equipment
The shot was taken using a Canon 5D MKIII DSLR fitted with a Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro lens. No other equipment was used.
Inspiration
I was looking for Fungus to photograph and spotted these bonnets at the top of the bank. It was not until I climbed the bank that the image I would take began to reveal itself. Choosing a suitable angle so that there was nothing too close behind the subject was crucial in ensuring that there would be a suitable blur to the background. I shot with the aperture wide open at f2.8 which kept the depth of field shallow to avoid any background distractions.
Editing
Apart from slight tweaks to the levels there was very little done in post processing. The colours are as taken in camera.
In my camera bag
I always carry my Canon 5D MKIII as I love using this camera. The lenses that I pack are a Canon 50mm f1.8 prime lens, Canon 85mm f1.8 prime lens, Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro prime lens, Sigma 150 - 600mm zoom lens. A Manfrotto tripod and mini-tripod are also part of the kit. Depending on where and what I am photographing, some of the kit may remain in the car.
Feedback
Try to research the sort of places that the particular Fungi you are looking for grow. Then look carefully as it is easy to miss what you are searching for. Be careful where you tread as Fungi are delicate and easily destroyed or damaged. If you have to climb a grassy bank as I did, make sure that you secure your spare equipment. I had a lens in my jacket pocket which fell out as I was clambering up the bank. Find a position where you are comfortable and can hold the camera steady or if possible then use a tripod. Look at the background behind the subject and shoot towards a clutter free area if possible. Use a wide aperture to blur the background. Make sure you have sufficient light to take the shot and be prepared to increase the ISO to allow for a faster shutter speed if necessary when shooting hand held. Take several shots, changing position if possible.
