This shot was taken at Llangorse Lake, Breconshire. When I arrived the whole area was shrouded in freezing fog. When it began to clear it left the trees white with frost. It was quite magical and surreal and extremely cold. I managed about 40 minutes taking photographs before the cold got the better of me and I retreated to the warmth of the car. The lake was also flooded at the time and the bridge and boat booking hut were surrounded by water as can be seen in the photo. As the sun began to break through the fog the reflections appeared on the water.

Thank you so much. The atmosphere was magical on the day that I took the photograph.

Location
This photograph was taken at Llangorse Lake in the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is the largest natural lake in South Wales.Time
I love this photo. I arrived in Llangors around 9.30am and there was an incredibly eery and surreal feel to the village as it was shrouded in freezing fog. As I drove through the village towards the lake I could see that the trees were white with frost left by the freezing fog as it began to rise. Driving along the access road to the lake the whole place appeared to be deserted. It was very atmospheric. The sun was gradually starting to shed light through the fog. The lake was flooded and the path to the booking office for boat trips was totally submerged leaving the building and the small wooden bridge stranded in the lake. I started to take photographs as the light began to illuminate the water with a strange and beautiful light.Lighting
The rising fog seemed to filter the sunlight creating a mysterious glow and adding to the atmosphere already created by the freezing fog and white trees.Equipment
For this shot I used a Sony a290 DSLR and a Sony 18mm - 55mm lens set at 35mm hand held.Inspiration
The atmosphere created by the freezing fog with the sunlight providing a strange filtered light along with the reflections on the lake surface just cried out for someone to take a photograph to record this event. After framing several shots I liked the angle and direction of this one especially when the swans swam into the empty space to the right of the building as it gives the image balance.Editing
I adjusted the white balance in post processing and adjusted levels, contrast and sharpening. I then applied one of my presets. In my camera bag
At the time that I took this photograph I carried my Sony a290 with an 18mm - 55mm zoom lens and a 55mm - 200mm zoom lens. These days I always have my Canon 5d MkIII with a Canon 24mm - 105mm zoom lens and a range of filters. My other equipment which finds it's way into my bag includes, Canon 50mm prime lens, Canon 85mm prime lens, Canon 100mm Macro prime lens, Sigma 150mm - 600mm telephoto zoom lens. Spare batteries and memory cards. A sturdy tripod.Feedback
Trying to guess when this type of weather will occur is almost impossible, it's a case of being in the right place at the right time. However when you find that the area you have traveled to is covered in mist or fog then venture into it (safely of course). If you know the scene you want to shoot then set yourself up in readiness with your camera on your tripod if you are using one. Check the available light with your camera's metering system and decide on a suitable ISO and shutter speed depending on whether you are shooting hand held or from a tripod. Use a small aperture to give a good depth of field. Take a few shots and adjust your settings accordingly until you get the shot you want.Don't rush things but wait for the mist / fog to begin to disperse and take photographs as the light changes so that you have a series of shots in different lighting. Change position if a new view presents itself. Above all enjoy what you are doing.
