On Dec 15th last year I've had an eye operation. "Phacoemulsificatio et Implantatio IOL" is the proper term for cataract removal by ultrasound and implantation of an artificial lens. This is what I saw during the operation.

I have drawn "the patient's view" for the doctor's information, and maybe for the benefit of people about to experience the same procedure.

The black shape is the microscope objective, and the gap between two halves is about the only thing you can see as "sharp" during the procedure... ;)

By the way... do not fret if you're due for this operation. It is entirely painless, takes about 20 minutes, and when the anaestethic (eyedrops) wears off in about one hour, you can see as clearly as ever. :)))

This is great, you've answered my question about the operation. I've heard this is a simple procedure. I don't mind being temporarily blind, because I want to be an opthalmologist or researcher for vision in my next lifetime. I dare say I balk at the transplanting of other peoples' parts into my anatomy, so thanks for pre-straightening me out on that one!

You get an artificial lens, not an organic one, of course. There are various models with various advantages. Google Alcon for details.
Oh, and they do not have zooms... yet... :)
