Location
This is called Kannareaville Falls. It is about an hour hike out of Kannareaville (two hours for us- we stopped a LOT along the way). It is a beautiful hike, and a fairly easy one.... but expect a LOT of people in the summer months. We did this as a day trip out of Salt Lake City.Time
For this picture- well up a slot canyon- time of day is really immaterial. There is no direct light here at all. The quality of the light might improve at sunset, but I doubt it would make too much difference.Lighting
Just soft, reflected light...Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D500 and a 14-24mm zoom. I shot fairly stopped down, at around f14 I believe... so I could get a REAL long exposure. There are a lot of people here, and there are 2-3 people IN THIS IMAGE.... but as long as they move around during a long exposure, you don't see them. Instant crowd control! No flash. Tripod for sure! I probably did not have a remote shutter release then, so I would have put this on a time-release for stability.Inspiration
When we shot Mesa Arch in August, one of the Photogs we met there told us about this place. Its no secret, and it is easy to find. But his description put it high up on our to-do list. And we were able to do this as a day trip, so as soon as we had an open day we did it.Editing
I id adjust the contrast and exposures in Lightroom. That is always a given in my pictures. I usually boost the colors a bit because I love vibrant colors. The blue in the water is really there, as is the reds of the Fruity Pebbles rocks. In my camera bag
I give a lot of thought to what I am going to shoot. Sometimes I just take a camera and a lens. But my basic kit is a 14-24mm, a 70-200, a 50 and a 35. I will grab an 85 and a 135 for portraits. I use a D500 with a D300s as backup. I keep 3 flashes with me. And a remote. And a lot of gel filters for the flashes.Feedback
Camera does not matter. Lens does not matter. I would even say having a tripod doesn't matter. If you know what you are doing. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS YOUR DRIVE. You are the only one who is going to push you out the door at 3 am for that sunrise, or keep you up at midnight in the freezing cold to get the shot. And that is what you have to do to get "That Shot."
