Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the balcony of a Princess Cruise ship in Glacier Bay, Alaska. My family and I were on a 7 day Alaskan Cruise, going from Vancouver to Anchorage.

Time

This photo was taken right before 5pm in Alaska. This was during the summer which means that it would be light outside until about 11pm! I had spent the entire morning taking pictures of the Glaciers out the back of the ship. We had had lunch and headed to our room. When I walked out on the balcony and saw this scene, I spend the next few hours snapping shots. It was incredible.

Lighting

This is of course natural lighting. Summertime in Alaska is magical. It will stay light outside from about 5am to 11pm. Which means plenty of time for photos! Landscape shots are plentiful!

Equipment

This was taken handheld using a Canon T5. This was using the kit lens: 18-55mm. No other flash or equipment needed. The natural beauty of this place is simply incredible.

Inspiration

This was towards the end of our vacation, I think we had one more day until we were getting off the ship. I had spent all morning taking pictures of glaciers, and our family. It was a ton of fun. But once we were back in our stateroom, sitting out on the balcony, it would have been impossible to not break out the camera. This type of cruise is something I will always recommend. It was incredible. The natural landscape is all around you. It really makes you appreciate nature.

Editing

Yes, there was some post-processing. Mostly to bring out the details in the water. This was all done in Lightroom. The white balance was not quite right, so I had to play with the tone to get this to look as natural as possible. And I increased the contrast to really make the water pop.

In my camera bag

In my bag, I normally have a few items: 3 Lenses, speedlite flash, polarizing filter, 2 extra batteries, 1 extra flashdrive. I have also begun to have adjustable ND filters on me at all times, as long exposure is becoming one of my favorite styles of photography. Other than that, I usually have some items to clean lenses just in case. And some snacks. You never know how long you are going to be shooting!

Feedback

Really take your time to set up the shot. This was definitely not the first shot I took of this scene. I moved all around looking for my favorite angle. Being on a cruise ship was an incredible advantage, since I could get such a large, clear shot at the mountains.
