Well, I have returned from The Wave earlier this week, and am busy going through new images now. Here is an image from my last hike in the Coyote Buttes that I particularly like. Note how the color of the rock and the frequency of the sunlight mesh just perfect and give the whole landscape a glowing quality.

Behind The Lens

Location

This is from the Coyote Buttes area of Utah / Arizona border area. This area is administered by the BLM... and id a closed wilderness area. That is you need a permit to go into this area.

Time

This is near sunset. This specific location really only looks good at sunset. The rest of the time it is pretty flat-looking.

Lighting

Again, sunset light, so very horizontal light...

Equipment

This was a simple set up. Nikon D-810, tripod and mid-range zoom 24-70mm at 70.

Inspiration

Its a pretty classic image from this location.

Editing

I did bring down the shadows of the BG some to make the wave a bit more prominent....

In my camera bag

For this trip I REALLY had to edit my bag. This is a long hike in the desert, and to make a day of it, we each had to take 2 gallons of water. That is a LOT.... both in space and in weight. Since staying alive is the biggest priority, I start dropping gear to the basics for this. I took my lightest carbon fiber legs with a BH-55 head. I took the ultra wide and a 24-70- no long glass on this trip.

Dont just drop your pod and shoot. Move around, work it. Pay attention to the edges and make the whole frame work!
