Hey Mikelea thanks for your kind words, this was taken in Watamu, Kenya 6 months ago. The skies are so unbelievably clear there

I love everything about this image, the sharpness, the composition, the light and the silhouettes.

Location
This photo was taken on a moonless evening in Watamu, Kenya in the summer months last year (2015).Time
I remember after a long day in the sun the night came as a huge relief, but also treated me to a beautiful moonless and cloudless night. This photo was taken between 23:00 - 24:00Lighting
Although this part of Kenya is largely rural you can see the orange glow of a distant town on the left side and the white light of a small fishing village on the right. It was a beautifully clear night and the Milky Way could be clearly seen with naked eye.Equipment
I use the Sony Mirrorless range of cameras for their ease of travel, this was taken with the following: - Sony A6000 Camera - Samyang 12mm f2.0 (one of the cheapest but most impressive lenses I own) - Cheapo carbon tripodInspiration
I have always been facinated in night sky photography, and with the recent improvements in low light performance of cameras it has been more prevalant than ever. Whilst I was in South Africa I caught a glimpse of the Milky way in all its glory but in hindsight this couldnt compare to the clear nights of Kenya. This was the second night I was out trying to capture the milky way and I knew I wanted to try a panorama.Editing
Despite having a pretty wide 12mm wide angle lens to capture the full widith of the milky way I had to take 8 photos and stitch them together.. Once the photos were stitched and distortion corrected for (mostly) I imported the file into lightroom to tweak the colour balance, levels and detail. In my camera bag
When im travelling I like to keep the bare essentials and I have a very small camera bag that usually has the following: - Sony A6000 mirrorless camera - Travel Carbon Tripod - Sony 18 - 200 Lens - Samyang 12mm f2 Lens - Sony 35mm f1.8 I find this setup gives me great flexibility in shooting and all fits into a small bag.Feedback
My advice is to realise that you dont need the latest and greatest camera and lenses to capture something like this. Most cameras of the past 4/5 years will be able to capture the milky way. A wide and fast lens will greatly help in capturing as much light as possible. The Samyang range of lenses are reletively inexpensive and are highly regarded for their astrophotography suitability. LOCATION - You can capture the milky way on any clear night, but the further you get from light pollution the better your shots will come out. Have a look online for dark sky maps which show the areas of least light pollution in your area. There are also many apps available for mobile to help. (Photo Pills + Star Walk 2, to name a few) TRIPOD - Is a must, the exposures range from 12 - 30 seconds for a shot like this so hand-held is out of the question PATIENCE - Both waiting for the suitable night and also for the camera to do its thing, it can be quite frustrating with long exposure photography but if you nail the focus and the exposure it makes it all worth it.
